Prayers for a new day
Life in the modern world is so busy. How can we find time to pray especially in the morning when there are so many pressing things to do? Some people find getting up 15 minutes before everyone else makes that important difference.
Here is a simple prayer that you can use at the beginning of the day that won't take too long. In the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) the Psalmist says this:
"In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." (Psalm 5 verse 3).
Here then, is my simple prayer for the day. Feel free to use it as it stands or adapt it.
O Lord God, I thank you for the night that is past. I thank you for sleep, for comfort and security.
Thank you for my home and my family. Thank you for the food I will eat for breakfast. Lord, please help me never to take these things for granted.
Lord Jesus, as I face this new day, help me to use my time in a way that pleases you. Help me to be the best that I can be in all the jobs that I do, whether at work or at home. Even when I am so busy, help me to think about you and what is really most important.
Lord, help me to be generous to others. Help me to think kindly of others even when they don't think kindly of me. Help me to be forgiving and understanding. Lord, in my heart I don't want to be a person who just thinks about myself. Help me to remember that my life is a gift and that it should be used well for others as well as myself.
Lord Jesus, you know that I am facing some real challenges today. I am afraid I can't do this by myself. Even though others think me strong, you know what fears are within my heart. Please give me your strength to face my challenges with courage and to do the right thing.
Lord, I commit my family to you today. I pray that you will bless them.
Lord, I commit myself to you today. I pray that you will bless me too. Help me to grow in faith and in trust and to learn more about you from your word. Help me also to learn to listen to you so that I may discover more and more of your purposes for my life.
Lord Jesus, I give this day to you.
